Mulholland Drive (2001) |
For those not familiar with David Lynch's work, Mulholland Drive may prove to be a good introduction to it.
For the majority of the film, it is fairly easy to follow what's going on,
with only relatively subtle twists, and it reveals itself to you at a nice pace.
In the last half hour or so, it turns totally Lynch-like where your mind struggles to keep up,
and where you find yourself for hours afterwards trying to work it out.
Remarkably, this time I do almost think I know what he was trying to convey ... maybe ...
I think the sudden change largely stems from the fact it was originally to be the pilot for a TV series, but when the american network pulled the funding, David Lynch adapted it into a film giving the ending his usual film treatment. The film is beautifully executed thoughout, with great acting (Naomi Watts has a lot of potential), direction, cinematography, and overall feeling and atmosphere. Your interpretation of it will of course largely affect your opinion of it - of three people I know have watched it, two enjoyed it and one hated it ... all seeing the story a different way. If you don't like David Lynch's work for whatever reason, then this film for you probably won't be any different from the rest. If you are a fan of his work, you should be well pleased. |
